On World Consumer Rights Day 2015, Consumers International has called for a Global Convention to Protect and Promote Healthy Diets, which would include measures such as responsible food marketing, food and nutritional standards, nutrition labelling, reformulation of processed food to reduce fat, sugar and salt and use of taxes or subsidies to support the consumption of healthy food. In an interview for euro-health.ro, Anna Glayzer, Global programme manager for food safety and nutrition Consumers International explains the need for an international food treaty and the similarities between poor diets and smoking.

It was hailed as the most important victory in tobacco control in decades and has been likened to a vaccine against lung cancer. Plain cigarette packaging – without the current appealing features – will soon arrive in the European Union, having been recently adopted in Ireland and the UK. Professor Mike Daube (Curtin University in Perth, Australia), chaired the committee of experts that first recommended the Australian Government to introduce plain packaging two years ago, gave an exclusive interview to euro-health.ro. He explains why plain packaging is important in tackling smoking, how the industry tried to fight it and what have been the political conditions for success.
