The refugee crisis: principles versus pragmatism

Mihail Călin: The refugee crisis might eventually be solved not by appealing to abstract, forgotten principles, but because of the spectre of even bigger threats.

This year, the European Health Forum in Gastein has paid special attention to the refugee crisis. The fact that the other big topic was the financially sustainable access to a growing number of new and costly medicines says a lot about just how great fears raised by hundreds of thousands of people knocking on Europe’s doors really are. But the kind of reassuring and mobilizing messages from the conference have no effect on the perception that most Europeans have of migrants. The refugee crisis might eventually be solved not by appealing to abstract, forgotten principles, but because of the spectre of even bigger threats.
